President's Corner

Welcome to the latest addition to the Va. FVIC web site. Each month I will post a message to our visitors with timely vaccine information. As each new month is posted, the previous month's message will be archived for you to refer to again, at a later date. Please feel free to respond to these posts. CONSTRUCTIVE replies would be greatly appreciated. Suggestions for future topics will also be considered.

Below is my FIRST edition to this column. Some of you have read this already. But, I felt that it is important and timely enough to re-post on this forum for others to see. You may also use this as a reference when speaking to others about the Hepatitis vaccine

Dear Friends,

If you haven't noticed, the new mandates for the Hepatitis B vaccine for 12 year olds are EVERYWHERE in the media lately (and don't forget that we are coming up on the infamous "No shots, no school" time of year!). There have been two articles (that I have seen, maybe more) in the Pilot recently and, WAVY TV 10 interviewed a MD about it on the noon news last week. I have emailed both sources. I am copying my response below. I hope that each of you will take just a couple of minutes and email both parties asking them to practice responsible journalism and report the whole story. Your emails can be short and sweet since mine should get the point across but the important thing is that they hear from many viewers/readers that demand credible journalism. Feel free to use information from my letter or use Va. FVIC or myself as a reference. I greatly appreciate any help you can give.

The email addresses are:

Elizabeth Simpson at liz@pilotonline.com
http://www.wavy.com - then go to "Contact 10" and leave a message under programming

You can send the same email to both, if written appropriately.

Thanks, in advance, for any help you can provide. Remember, I cannot do this alone!! Feel free to pass this request on to family and friends in our viewing/reading area.

Yours in health....Naturally,
Lisa Wynkoop

Dear Elizabeth,

Thank you for returning my call today and for understanding my concerns about the recent Hepatitis B vaccine article.

This issue was also addressed on the noon news on channel 10 yesterday. I responded to this story and thought you might like the same information. I have copied my letter to WAVY below.

I hope that you will consider writing an article with this information. All families have a right to have this knowledge BEFORE making health care decisions for their children and you would be doing a public service by printing it. In the very least, I hope you will print something with the correct information on medical and religious exemptions in Virginia. This information (statutes and exemptions) can be found at our new web site www.vafvic.org ("Virginia Families for Vaccine Information and Choice").

I know that this is a controversial issue, I just hope you and your editors will have give it the consideration it deserves.

Very truly yours,

Lisa Wynkoop, D.C.

To WAVY:
On your noon newscast yesterday (5/22/01), Dr. Carolyn Moneymaker stated the hepatitis B vaccine is, "good, very safe" and the only side effects are "soreness, malaise" and that they have had "a lot of experience with it - years and years". I beg to differ. Consider this:

In 1996, there were only 279 cases of hepatitis B reported in children under 14 in the entire United States. That same year, there were 872 reports of serious injuries and 48 deaths occurring in children under 14 who received the hepatitis B vaccine with other vaccines, and 13 deaths and 214 reports of serious reactions in children under 14 receiving the hepatitis B vaccine alone. At the Criminal Justice, Drug Policy, and Human Resources subcommittee of the House Committee on Government Reform hearing on the Hepatitis B vaccine in 1999, Susan Ellenberg, PhD, Director of the Division of Biostatistics and Epidimiology, FDA stated that there were 43 deaths following the vaccine in children under the age of 2 in 1997. She would not state that the vaccine caused the death, but did acknowledge that the deaths occurred shortly after the vaccine and there was an "association" between the children's deaths and the vaccine. A representative of the FDA is also quoted at this hearing as saying, via phone, call that "this vaccine is a problem and it is a big one".

THIS IS SAFE?!?!?!?

Dr. Moneymaker states the vaccine is "shown to prevent liver cancer". Again, not true. NO evidence proving this has ever been presented.

Next, when asked, "why children?" Dr. Moneymaker stated that they are "trying to immunize the whole population" so we are getting to the children so they will be immune as adults. Yet, according to Harold S. Margolis, MD, Chief of the Hepatitis Branch of the CDC, the CDC does not know how long the Hepatitis B vaccine is effective for. They have apparently followed the vaccine for 15 years but they have no idea the length of immunity from the vaccine. The vaccine package insert from the pharmaceutical company describes the length of protection as "undetermined". In the country of India they vaccinate EVERY FOUR YEARS.

DOES DR. MONEYMAKER KNOW SOMETHING THAT THE CDC, THE COUNTRY OF INDIA, AND THE PHARMACEUTICAL COMPANY THAT MADE THE VACCINE DO NOT?!?!

Consider also the following:

At the same Criminal Justice, Drug Policy, and Human Resources subcommittee, neither Dr. Margolis nor Dr. Ellenberg would answer the question as to whether the risks of the disease outweigh the benefits of the vaccine. Amazingly, according to Harrison's Principles of Internal Medicine (1994), "90-95% of all hepatitis B cases recover completely after 3-4 weeks of nausea, fatigue, headache, arthritis, jaundice and tender liver".

I keep remembering the children who died and how they will NEVER recover. I wonder if Dr. Moneymaker still has "NO CONCERNS" about the vaccine!

Most parents are also not told that the vaccine contains:
Formaldehyde - a highly noxious and carcinogenic preservative,
Thimerosal - a mercury derivative preservative BANNED by the FDA in over-the-counter drug preparations because of questions over safety (Federal Register: April 22, 1998 (Volume 63, Number 77)[Page 19799-19802] and,
Aluminum - as an adjuvant - this accumulates in the brain, muscle and bone tissue and can be linked to causing fibrosarcomas (cancerous tumors) at the injection site.

Additionally, there has not been any animal reproduction studies done for this vaccine. Considering this is the first mandated vaccine using recombinant DNA technology, this lack of research is appalling.

Again, I repeat, Dr. Moneymaker thinks this is a "very safe" and necessary vaccine. Did I miss something? Is it responsible journalism to allow such one sided misinformed information? I challenge you to take another look at the hepatitis B vaccine. I know your viewers would appreciate balanced information as they attempt to make conscientious health care decisions for their families.

Please remember that Hepatitis B, for teenagers, is primarily spread through irresponsible behavior. This proposed mandate lowers all pre-teens down to the lowest common denominator of irresponsible behavior of IV drug use and unprotected sex. Thank goodness all families in Virginia don't set their moral standards to the same scale as the Virginia General Assembly, the health department, the medical doctors, the FDA, the CDC, and the drug companies. All of who have outlined theoretical disease transmissions through organized sports and kids sharing razors or toothbrushes to unnecessarily scare parents, but the truth is that there are no real documented transmissions like these.

Please consider the issue of our children's health important enough to report on all aspects of this vaccine. I would be happy to help in any way.

Please feel free to contact me at the email or number above.

Sincerely,
Lisa Wynkoop, D.C.
